What are we learning this half term?

This half term our topic is 'Sunshine and Sunflowers', which is primarily driven by Understanding the World around us. We are going to be closely observing the growth of our sunflowers (which we planted last half term...we have already identified some rogue-entries last year's sunflowers obviously self-seeded); learning more about how plants grow (revisiting our germination work from last half term); learning about life cycles...expect lots of butterfly and tadpole chatter in the next few weeks; and we will be learning about the sun, how it moves during the day, why shadows are formed and how shadows change during the day.

What you need to know

PE Day

We have PE on a Monday, so children can come into school in their PE kit on this day.

Outdoor Explorers Day

On Friday we have an outdoor explorers session in our Forest School Area. Children can come into school wearing their PE kits and then will need a bag with the following items in:

  • waterproof coat,
  • wellies/spare trainers,
  • hat, gloves and scarf on cold days
  • sun hat for sunny days
  • change of trousers
  • change of socks and pants (just in case...we can get some pretty impressive puddles on our grass areas)

Reading

The children are sent home with a reading activity each week. This could range from word time sheets, ditty sheets, or a RWI story book. In phonics lessons, we teach the children to segment and blend each word confidently, and then we expect the children to read the text at least 5 times at home - this will be to build fluency, comprehension and expression.
