Maths No PROBLEM - the singapore approach
'The Singapore method of teaching mathematics develops children’s mathematical ability and confidence without having to resort to memorising procedures. It incorporates the use of concrete aids and manipulatives, through the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach, problem solving and group work.' (Maths, no problem website)
As a school we have chosen to use the Singapore maths approach to our teaching of mathematics. Children are engaged first through an 'in focus' task, encouraging children to discuss the ways they could solve the problem given to them. They are then given time to learn and practise the new skills they have been taught through the use of workbooks and precise teaching.
